From Punishment to Pardon

Preacher: Dr. Jerry Shields
Series: From Victim to Victory
Passage: Luke 23:32-43

Pastor Jerry discusses Jesus’ mission of bringing victory to those suffering in a fallen world, highlighting His presence by the cross with two criminals. One criminal, acknowledging his sins and the justness of his punishment, turns to Jesus and asks for mercy, receiving the promise of paradise. Pastor Jerry emphasizes that despite our pasts and the consequences we deserve, Jesus offers grace and pardon, exemplifying His commitment to saving humanity even in dire situations. Ultimately, he challenges the congregation to recognize their own need for Jesus and to respond to His offer of forgiveness and hope.

This five day devotional will be taking a deeper dive into the sermon from this weekend. We will explore themes of mercy, judgment, and salvation as illustrated by the interactions of Jesus on the cross with the criminals beside Him. Each day will encourage reflection on our own lives and our relationship with Christ.

Day 1

Luke 23:32-33
On this first day of our devotional, we reflect on the moment Jesus was crucified alongside two criminals. The essence of this passage reminds us that we often find ourselves at a crossroads in life, confronted with our own failures and the consequences that follow. Just like the criminals, we may feel the weight of our wrongdoings pressing down on us, but it is through recognizing our need for mercy that we can truly begin our journey to redemption. The act of Jesus forgiving those who wronged Him, even as He suffered, illustrates the depth of His love and the grace available to us. It beckons us to consider how we respond to our own hardships and mistakes, and challenges us to extend forgiveness to others as we have been forgiven. As we meditate on this passage, let us ask ourselves how we can emulate Christ’s compassion in our own lives.

  • What does the crucifixion of Jesus teach me about mercy?
  • In what ways have I failed to extend forgiveness to others?
  • How can I acknowledge my own wrongdoings in a healthy way?
  • Pray for the grace to forgive those who have wronged you.
  • Reflect on the mercy that Jesus extends to you personally.

Day 2

Romans 6:23
As we move to the second day of our devotional, we hold the truth that the wages of sin is death. This alarming statement isn’t simply about physical death; it echoes a spiritual reality that we all share. It calls us to confront the consequences of our actions and the weight of our sins, urging us to gain clarity on our state before God. The cross poignantly symbolizes the depth of our depravity while simultaneously showcasing the immeasurable grace that is offered to us through Jesus. This day, let us reflect on the idea that while we are deserving of judgment, through Christ, we are offered life. Understanding this contrast of judgment and mercy provides us with an opportunity for transformation. We are urged to not only embrace the forgiveness offered but to allow it to permeate our lives, shifting how we live and relate to one another.

  • How does recognizing my own sin shape my view of Jesus’ sacrifice?
  • In what ways can I make amends for past wrongs in my life?
  • What does eternal life in Christ mean to me?
  • Thank God for the mercy He has shown you.
  • Ask for the strength to acknowledge your sins and seek healing.

Day 3

Hebrews 9:27
On this third day, we focus on the reality that man is destined to die once, and after that, to face judgment. This straightforward statement forces us to confront the inevitability of our mortality and the serious implications of our choices. As we think about the two criminals crucified with Jesus, we realize that they came face to face with their final hours—a profound moment of reckoning. This portion of our devotional challenges us not just to acknowledge our mortality, but to evaluate the life we are living. Understanding that this life leads us to judgment should inspire us to live with intention and purpose, seeking ways to live in obedience and to share the hope we have in Christ with others who may find themselves in despair.

  • What does acknowledging my mortality reveal about how I live my life?
  • How do I reconcile my daily choices with my faith in Christ?
  • In what ways can I prepare myself and others for “the after”?
  • Pray for wisdom to live each day with purpose.
  • Reflect on the eternal hope that comes through Jesus Christ.

Day 4

Luke 23:39-43
As we enter the fourth day of our devotional journey, we’ll explore the poignant exchange between the criminals and Jesus. One criminal berates Jesus while the other recognizes his own guilt and appeals for mercy, revealing to us the stark choice we all face—rebellion or redemption. It is a testament to the power of grace that even in our lowest moments, we can turn to Jesus and receive the salvation we desperately need. This act of repentance and acknowledgment of sin opens the door to a profound relationship with Christ. Just as the criminal was assured a place in paradise, we too can be reminded that God loves us unconditionally and is eager to welcome us home. Reflect on this promise—no matter what we have done, Jesus is willing and able to save us when we cry out to Him.

  • What does it mean to truly acknowledge my sin before God?
  • How can I recognize moments where I need to ask for mercy?
  • What does it mean for my relationship with Christ to know I am saved?
  • Thank Jesus for His grace and mercy.
  • Consider someone who needs to hear the message of hope today.

Day 5

2 Corinthians 5:21
In our final day of reflection, let us meditate on the truth that He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf. This powerful verse encapsulates the heart of the Gospel and reminds us of the incredible sacrifice made for us. The exchange—our sins for His righteousness—is the foundation of our faith and encapsulates the essence of Jesus’ mission on earth. As we conclude this devotional, we are called to respond to this gift with gratitude and action. We are urged to embrace our identity as children of God and to live in such a way that reflects the transformative power of Jesus in our lives. It is our responsibility to share this message of reconciliation with a world that desperately needs to hear it.

  • How can I actively live out my faith daily?
  • What steps can I take to share this message of hope with others?
  • How does understanding Christ’s sacrifice transform my perspective on life?
  • Ask for opportunities to share your testimony with others.
  • Reflect on the areas of your life where you need to embrace righteousness.
